hi Christie and Brenda,
My hospital delivers about 3000 babies a year. All our LCs are RNs, we are covered under the same union contract as the rest of the staff nurses. It is VERY unusual for the LC to be pulled to work as a staff RN, because everyone knows taking on the LC's workload will just make the day so much busier for all the staff. We have 2 inpatient LCs on every day of the week, one for Mom-baby, the other for NICU. We also run an outpatient service 5 days a week, which is staffed by a third LC, who is our boss, she also attends meetings, writes policy, and organizes conferences, etc... Not sure how many FTEs that is, but you can figure it out. Pay depends on experience and seniority, as defined by contract. I am paid $33/hour.
Good luck!

Subject: non-RN LCs

Brenda,
I am working on a business plan for our county hospital (500 births/month)
to hire at least two FTE IBCLCs. I would be very interested in the
salaries/benefits and job descriptions for non-RN IBCLCs (and RN, IBCLCs as well) as I
think that hiring RN, IBCLCs would make them PRN RNs and that isn't the point
of hiring them!
Thanks,
Christie Pillado

Subject: Non RN LCs

Hello,

I work in a hospital with 1500 yearly births. I am kept quite busy with
inpatient, outpatient and breastpump rental/retail station duties. I am
not an RN, and am paid less that RN wages. I do have a bachelor's degree
and have been board certified for 10 years.

Could anyone on this list who is a non-RN hospital-based LC please
e-mail me privately? I would like to determine salary ranges, if
possible.

Thanks,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
