This sounds like a classic case of the pump flange nipple tunnel being 
too small and depriving the nipples of oxygen. When the pump is removed, 
the circulation increases and the nipples become purple.
Glad you were able to get the glass flanges.  Some other options include 
using lower suction on the pump (with symphony's linked suction and 
cycle design, this might not be too effective, she might do better 
switching to another pump), taking short, frequent "perfusion breaks" 
during pumping to let the nipples get some circulation back, and 
teaching this mom manual (hand) expression of milk.
