My understanding of the situation is that one might do a PhD on a topic
related to lactation or breastfeeding in pretty much any university but that
the challenge would be to find a supervisor with the experience and
willingness to supervise. It very much depends upon the project thus, a
project looking at breastfeeding education might belong in a education
school, ethics in a philosophy school, care of nicu babies in nursing or
medicine schools, breastfeeding behaviour in Social science schools etc.
The practicalities of doing a PhD via distance would again depend on the
project and the confidence in the ability of the candidate to do the job
with limited face to face supervision....I almost did the latter myself (was
very rarely actually at the uni 150km from home and main research site). I
guess in the nutshell, the key is knowing what you want to do and finding
someone who will support you in it.
