Dear Friends:
I posted over a month ago about a baby that was so angry that his mother
couldn't even hold him skin to skin. (Many of you sent wonderful, cheering
posts about him.) I made several home visits and when I left, she was pumping
a full supply and bottle-feeding. The baby had got to the point where he
could snuggle some, helped in part by his parents joy in bedsharing.
His mother brought the hospital-grade pump back yesterday. He suddenly
started breastfeeding about 3 weeks ago. One day, he just decided to do it.
She had been offering daily. Now they are an exclusively breastfeeding dyad!
She is thrilled.
The lessons here: bring in a full milk supply with a hospital grade
pump, as much s2s and infant massage and holding as the baby will tolerate.
Offering the breast regularly. Being patient and persistent. Never pushing the
baby to breast; giving the baby every opportunity to make the best choice.
warmly,
