The pt. was advised not to breastfeed because of the Linezolid.  I had
already researched Hale and also spoke with the Center for the Study of
Human Lactation who advised me that this is a "gray area" because there is
not a lot of information out there on this drug as of yet.  They also told
me the half life of this drug is 5 hours and advised that if the
pediatrician were comfortable with encouraging the breast feeding that the
mom wait 5 hrs. after a dose is given to nurse the baby.
The pediatrician was hesitant to have the baby with the mom because of the
VRE.  Very complex situation here.  That's why I'd like to speak with
someone who has faced a similar situation like this.  Our infection control
nurse told me she has seen patients with VRE have the infection for years.
My own thought is that the sooner we can get the baby back to breast, the
safer the baby will be.
