Kathleen,
About five years ago a pregnant woman attended my LLL meeting. At the end
of the meeting, when I asked if there were any questions, she asked if
anyone else had ever experienced mastitis while they were pregnant. No one
had and we strongly suggested she contact her health care provider for a
diagnosis and treatment since her symptoms were very similar to mastitis.
She ended up being treated with Keflex which did not help the situation.
The infection worsened, she had to be hospitalized and was given IV
antibiotics. She went into pre-term labor and had an emergency cesarean.
While she was still in the hospital, it was determined that she had
inflammatory breast cancer (see http://cis.nci.nih.gov/fact/6_2.htm), not
mastitis. I certainly hope this is not the case for the woman in your unit,
but am passing this information along in case it is relevant.
