Do you know if the researchers who found this connected also looked at how
the babies were fed after birth? I find that many breastfeeding mothers
whose babies are SGA are urged to supplement with formula or with human milk
fortifier if baby is at all premature in order to help the baby gain weight
more quickly and catch up. I have often wondered if this is truly desirable
in terms of later obesity problems - if the baby might do better with a
slower but steady weight gain and exclusive breastfeeding. I would also
wonder about the LGA babies, because many women who have had gestational
diabetes are urged to give formula in the first few days to prevent low
blood sugar in their babies, which sometimes interferes with the
establishment of breastfeeding, and then often feel they need to supplement
because they won't have enough milk for their big babies.
