Hi Renee,
It's pretty common for little ones to reject the breast during harsh moments
of teething. Some babies find that sucking is soothing, but other find it
bothers their mouths and/or their ears. Since the saliva in a teething baby
is thick and profuse, it can block their Eustachian tubes and cause pressure
to build up. She probably doesn't like to lie down right now either.
To help her with the pain, many mothers swear by a homeopathic combination
remedy by Hyland's called Teething Tablets. I've seen it in most mainstream
grocery stores lately, it's gaining such popularity. Sometimes if my kids
were so miserable they couldn't sleep or even play, I gave in and offered a
dose of baby ibuprofen, to make both our lives more tolerable.
As for the question about her stools, that's absolutely fine and normal for
a temporary situation. Lots of moms who tandem nurse report that their
older child's stools become like a newborn's again after the second baby is
born. Since moms usually lose most if not all their milk during the
pregnancy, it's like the older kid wants to catch up on missed milk. It
also helps them adjust to life with the strange new alien their mom won't
put down. My ds wasn't particularly interested in food until he was 2.5 but
he always seemed to have plenty of energy to get into all kinds of mischief!
Hang in there and give yourself big kudos for mothering your little one so
lovingly through a very uncomfortable time in her life.
HTH,
Debbie
