Just in case anybody else was thinking of writing to this guy (Dr.
Miller at Stanford), despite his obvious political/corporate
affiliations that made it a waste of time (or is it really a waste? and
how do we know?), I wrote a non-inflammatory response detailing my
concerns:
a) I don't like that he asserts that formula is clean and safe when all
those recalls say it isn't.
b) Artificial feeding does not contribute to empowerment of women *or*
the health of babies in developing nations.
c) Women deserve to have unbiased information so that they can make an
informed choice, without getting bogged down in marketing or politics
(his Western imperialism, which I think does exactly the opposite of
what he accuses).
I won't paste his response, since I don't have permission, but he
informed me that I didn't read his article carefully, and that what he
was *really* objecting to was misleading labeling that falsely
(falsely??) implies that formula routinely contains pathogenic
organisms. He didn't mention the deal about powdered formula not being
safe for newborns, which I did bring up. He quotes the FDA regs at
length, and believes they are doing a great job of quality control. He
says that activists have created such a vendetta against formula
companies that it is not possible that (in my words from my email)
"Western marketing victimiz[es] babies worldwide."
And then he closes by informing me that he does not wish to engage in
further dialogue.
Uh huh.
