We do this in Mississippi. We only wish we could get more hospitals to let
us in...
Our Senior Peer Counselors (We call them Lactation Specialists) and our
IBCLCs in some areas go into the hospital and visit every newly delivered mom.
They asses for WIC eligibility, certify those eligible and provide
breastfeeding information and assistance to any who want it.
In the hospitals where we are allowed to do this it is a win-win situation.
WIC increases participation numbers and the hospital IBCLCs don't have to
spend their limited time with moms who really only need a Peer Counselor.

"I wish the WIC LCs could come by like the formula reps and sell
breastfeeding for their clients."
OK, let's come up with a plan. What would this look like?
Arly Helm, MS, IBCLC
