It is not unusual for Clare Byam-Cook to come home from a night out to find her answer machine chock-full of messages from tearful women. Some are so distraught that they call back three times before they can even speak. The anguished calls come from breast- feeding mothers driven to distraction by painful nipples, a baby who won't latch on, or who isn't feeding properly. A new survey of National Childbirth Trust (NCT) members reveals that over two-thirds of respondents are worried about being able to breast-feed. And when hospital and community midwives, maybe even NCT counsellors, have tried their best but without success, even third-time mothers turn to the sometimes controversial Byam-Cook.
