"Efforts to prevent childhood obesity should start in infancy, the American
Heart Association recommends to parents in a statement released Monday.
Epidemic obesity rates among children is a developing problem, said Dr.
Stephen R. Daniels, a cardiologist and childhood obesity expert at Cincinnati
Children's Hospital Medical Center and lead author of the statement.
Prevention efforts include:
Breast-feeding infants.
Ensuring that preschoolers get five servings of fruits and vegetables and at
least an hour of active play each day.
Improving school lunch menus.
Increasing physical education class time.
Encouraging older children to put down the video games and work up a sweat.
The scientific statement, a review of previously published research, appears
in today's edition of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart
Association."
