I have permission to post. Mom is 5 months pregnant, 22 years old, first
baby. Had her nipples pierced at 17, but removed the rings 1.5-2 years ago.
History of irritation and infection with the nipple rings until she removed
them. Really wants to breastfeed but is concerned that her piercing holes
never closed and when she squeezes the area around them, a few drops of
clear thick fluid comes out. It doesn't drip out by itself. And she never
squeezed the holes until recently. Mom says the drops smell funny also. No
fever, or pain in the area, looks normal to mom (this was a phone call
situation).

I told her the usual story about nursing with the extra holes will be fine,
and asked her to have her OB check the area just in case there is infection.
But this sounds a lot like "normal" body fluids or perhaps even early
colostrum, especially since it doesn't leak unless she squeezes it out. Does
anyone have a better idea?

Thanks, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
