Hi Kathleen,

Thank you for the kind wishes from everyone and please feel free to
forward this to the other Lactnet members. Since my son Merritt was
born on September 15th, I have searched the Lactnet archives
countless times for answers to my most obscure concerns about
nursing, and I have always found what I needed to know and left with
peace of mind.

I am definitely what you would call a breastfeeding success story. I
had a C-section and thanks to the lactation consultant on duty at the
time, Merritt was brought to me almost immediately. I knew that
nursing was often a bit of a challenge at first so I would tell
Merritt each time we tried that we were going to work together and
get it right eventually. And we did, while ignoring my concerned
mother-in-law's suggestions of supplementing with water and formula.

I never got sore nipples--other mothers I talk to are amazed by this.
I don't know if it's because mine are different or because I applied
lanolin as a preventive measure as soon as I left the hospital.

I was able to breastfeed exclusively for six months, which was my
goal. At that point I thought it was time that I start giving
Merritt solid foods starting with rice cereal like the books say.
Well, he will have none of it and at seven and a half months he is
still breastfeeding exclusively. When I tell other moms about this
they wonder if I am up around the clock keeping him fed. Actually he
eats every three hours during the day and sleeps about 12 hours a
night on average.

I feel like I am so lucky/blessed/charmed to have had a wonderful
experience like this. Also that I have a pediatrician who is very
accepting and supportive of the situation. I thought I would be
breastfeeding Merritt for a year at most but something tells me it's
going to be a lot longer than that.

So thank you Kathleen and Lactnet!!!! Keep up the good work :-)

Connie Rice
