Subject: Stomach reduction and breastfeeding

I have personal experience as I have had a gastric bypass and am currently
bf an 11 mo old. I had quite a time with supply at first. After a LOT of
research had my B-12 level and Zinc levels checked and found that they were both
lacking. Once I was supplemented in those nutrients my supply has increased
to the point where she was totally bf again. She did have quite a time
gaining weight initially and was close to failure to thrive status. Luckily I had
a friend who was bf twins who pumped extra for me and got her through the
rough spots. There is minimal research on pregnancy and bf after gastric
bypass, and the only thing I could find was a study concerning the B-12. Turned
out to be true for me. You might talk to a dietician who works with gastric
bypass patients, the one I talked to had some experience with bf moms who had
gb surgery and was able to be quite a help. Oh and btw, my B-12 was
technically normal (very low normal) at first they didn't think it was needing to be
treated, but after the research it turns out it needs to be in the high
normal range to help milk production.
I will see if I can find the research article I am referring to.
