Hi All,
Had to reply to this comment. :) Karen wrote:

Can't imagine a nipple actually falling off....ouch. Keep

Karen, as a result of baby #2 having a dysfunctional suck and a HIGH bubble
palate I lost a full 1/4 of my left nipple. After trying to BF for 2 weeks
in agonizing pain, the left side of the left nipple was severely
traumatized, the right side of that same nipple was not so bad. That nipple
is lopsided, the poor thing. Initially, roughly half of it was gone, but it
regenerated to leaving me badly (and noticeably) scarred. The right nipple
which had a 1/4 in deep crater in the center is also noticeably scarred.
They just aren't pretty anymore. ;) The pain I was in was unimaginable.
However, with Karen Evon's help and Chele Marmet's assistance with suck
training (and 2 months of healing for the right nipple and 3 of the left)
and recognition of the bubble palate we got everything figured out and that
kid went on to BF for 3 years and 2 months. :) Oh, and he was on a bottle
for almost 2 months solid - never needed a shield and was never nipple
confused. Go figure. If you want to read the whole story check back in the
archives in 1995 and it is all there. He is the reason I am a Lactation
Consultant... :)

Warmly,
(and with 'fond' - cough - memories of those days...cough..)
Jaye Simpson, IBCLC
