Claire, when I try to help mothers and parents understand the need and
importance of a baby extending their head when feeding instead of flexing, I give
them a demonstration.
I ask them to place their chin on their chest and swallow. Then I have them
slightly lift their chins and swallow. They usually smile because they know
they do not hold their chins to their chest while eating and drinking.
The next thing I do is asking the mother permission to touch her, I place my
hand behind her neck. As I move my hand up I gently push her head forward
and then ask her how comfortable she is. Then I move my hand down toward the
upper back and neck and ask how this now feels.
I reassure parents that the neck and shoulders support the head and when
placing your hands there this is the more comfortable way to hold a baby.
Hope this helps.
