Like Nikki and Esther, I have become a big fan of spoon feeding for all the
same reasons they described. It is easy, low-tech, and not a drop of
colostrum is wasted. We use the wrapped plastic spoons from the kitchen;
they are supposed to be sterile products. I teach the mom that 1 tsp = 5 ml
and 7.5 ml is the average amount of a newborn's first feeding. It is very
empowering for the mom, especially if the baby is not latching or eating and
the nurse says the "S" word (supplement). This gives the mom the ability to
be in control of supplementing her baby with her own milk, without the
hassle and loss of colostrum with a pump. I have the parents feed the baby
themselves, also, so that the mom or dad can do it when no LC is around.
