Dear Angela, your situation as your wrote about it sounds just terrible.
This points out that all women interested in becoming IBCLC should be
keeping written records or logs of everyone they help, how they were
helped -- phone, in person --, the problem, the resolution, and the time it
took. I would suggest a one page summary with mom's name and address and
phone and the date on the top, and a summary of the problem in the middle,
and what you suggested or did on the bottom half, along with your signature.
There are various forms made for this, LLL and WIC has some and I am sure
many hospitals. Another idea is to record each BF helping situation in a
spiral notebook. These would be someone's formal and 'legal" documentation
and would get the person ready for the real world documentation required of
IBCLCs. We are supposed to keep written records of every contact, phone
call, consultation, etc.

Good luck to you. Your post points out to one of the flaws of our exam
system. I hope you can move forward and become an exam candidate.

Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
