I see this all too often. Some of the blame goes to the companies who try
to sell the lanolin as well as gel pads to "prevent soreness". In addition,
standing orders for nursery has the refined lanolin as a PRN (as needed)
order so it's there if mom needs it, but the nurses like to give it to every
mom and push its use as a prevention of soreness. I think it reflects the
attitude that nursing has to hurt, so try to prevent it with "something"
rather than preventing by effective latching etc. A danger is that by
reinforcing the "it's normal to hurt" myth, moms wait too long to get help
or give up because they "couldn't handle the normal pain".
Makes you wonder how our ancestors survived. Did the cave moms smear bear
grease on their nipples? ;<)
