For starters, mom can breastfeed before the solid meals, and spread the
food out a little through the day, cereal at one meal, the baby food at
another, so baby isn't so stuffed that she waits hours for her next
breastfeeding. A baby relying this heavily on solids should probably be
getting meats, for protein, iron and zinc instead of so many fruits and
veggies, which are low in calories.
It sounds like mom's supply is really dwindling, and it can be more
difficult to increase it at this age. Encourage her to try pumping every
waking hour for a few days to give the breasts a lot of stimulation. She
can use the pumped milk in a supplementer to give baby more incentive to
breastfeed. I'd also refer mom to a breastfeeding medicine doc to see if
she is a candidate for domperidone. It has helped in low milk supply
situations in my practice, in combination with the frequent pumping and
breastfeeding. The bf med doc can also check her for thyroid or hormonal
issues which may predispose to low milk supply and treat those as well.
Sometimes a babymoon helps as well, hanging out at home without a shirt
on and holding baby skin to skin all day, so that she is tempted to
breastfeed very often. Perhaps she can try babymoon for the next day or
so, and then the "powerpumping" over the weekend when hopefully dad is
home to help with everything else.
