G6PD is an enzyme that is important for the integrity of red blood cell
membranes. When someone with a deficiency of this enzyme (also called
Mediteranean anemia) eats foods rich in "reducing substances" such as
fava beans, they can destabilize their erythrocyte membranes and have a
"hemolytic crisis". In other words, red blood cells disintegrate,
causing moderate to severe anemia. Pediazole, a commonly used pediatric
antibiotic, can cause hemolysis in people with this disorder, so mom
should carefully remind each physician who deals with her baby to double
check any drug or food recommendations. The degree of anemia varies
(when reducing foods/drugs are not taken), so baby might be watched a
little more closely than usual.
