Love those Belly Balls!!! Brought back a set from Chicago and I started
showing them to some of the pedi's on rounds. They were amazed!? A few thought
the parents should see them. I reported if they look on wall in glass case
across from where all the newborns go initially for transition and all parents
who walk the unit can see there they are! I also carry a set in my pouch which
is accessible to all the staff for scissors and cord clamp removers etc. If
they need to show skeptical family members they are welcomed to borrow and
return.
Does it make a difference? For some a definite yes! for others they can't
envision that their baby's stomach is soooo small if the baby keeps sucking.
Then we address non-nutritive sucking. And then there are some who then ask
for a pacifier at this point.
Sometimes its quite obvious that the parents are not going to get it even
with visual aids.
I think Ameda should send a mass mailing to all Maternal Child Units or
pediatrics at least in Miami to remind them of something they once learned and
have forgotten by choice. We have one guy who tells all breastfeeding Moms BF
10 minutes each breast and feed 1 oz of his chosen formula. When I asked him
why he gave such instructions his response was: "She won't be calling me in
the middle of the night because the baby isn't getting enough!"
His wife who is a pedi doesn't breastfeed because they don't have time. Both
are obese and the kids are chunky too. Oh well.
I salute the Belly Balls creator.
