Diane,
This deficiency is not uncommon among Dominican people, and I have
several WIC clients with children with this metabolic deficiency.
I've heard it said that if you "have" to have a inborn error of
metabolism, this is the one to have...
The only dietary restriction that I'm aware of is broad beans/(like
fava beans)...which isn't a normal part of the Dominican diet, (the
beans they eat frequently are a "safe" variety) Of far greater
concern isn't giving the child certain medications, of (I believe) the
sulfa family....
I'm a nutritionist by profession, not a nurse/MD so I might not be
totally accurante.
I believe most of the children I know of with this deficiency,. *were*
in fact breastfed, and have never heard anyone say it was
incompatible. The children themselves seem to develop perfectly
normally.
I can't speak to the jaundice factor, but I will ask about it next
time a client tells me that their child has it.
I also haven't heard of it being diagnosed prenatally, only after birth...
Warmly,
June Eastman, BS, MS, M.Ed, IBCLC
Lawrence Massachusets WIC Program.
