The elusive 2-5% number is one that has been floating around for a number of
years after being coined as a phrase by Dr. Marianne Neifert in a journal
article in the late 80s or early 90s. Betty Crase, BA, IBCLC who was one of the
first managers of the Center for Breastfeeding Information, and is currently
employed by the AAP managing Breastfeeding Promotion Programs has given a
wonderful talk several times explaining this 'fallacy" at both LLLI Conferences and
LLL of Illinois Area Conferences. I will search for my notes latler this
evening and see what else was discussed but I'm fairly sure she estimates the true
number as near 1%, and supports that with some references and research.
