Got a call today from a woman who works for a local OB. She is the African
American mother of a baby whom she breastfed for 10 months who was diagnosed
with Rickets at 8 months and she is now making it her personal mission to
inform all agencies like LLL, LC's in hospitals and offices, OB's,
pediatricians, etc. that all babies who are breastfed should be "on a multi vitamin plus a
bottle of formula a day", in particular Aftrican American babies who do not
absorb Vit D from sunlight in the way that light skinned babies do. She was
very angry and wanted me to tell her that LLL would endorse this policy. Of
course I could not do that and though she would not let me get a word in, I
tried to tell her that indeed LLLI was very aware of the need for Vitamin D
supplementation in breastfed babies particularly in dark skinned babies, BUT,
that I needed to determine their exact position on the matter before I
committed to this stand. She does not have email so I got her address and told her
that I would send her all the info I could find, but that there would be no
way that LLL would endorse formula. I cannot find a very current up to the
minute position on this issue from LLLI. I don't want the vague writing in BAB
that is now dated. I have checked the Lactnet archives but, I feel that
if I send this woman any info that is related to Caucasian babies, it will
only fuel her fire. I really need something specific to dark skin. Is there in
fact, a way to take Vit D supplementation without taking a multi vitamin
complex? Any suggestions? Thanks, Ann Conlon-Smith, IBCLC, LLLL
