I have seen success with pre-adoption pumping. I encourage moms to start
as soon as they know they are getting a baby, with 6-12 weeks as ideal.
First mom starts pumping as often as she can for only one minute at a
time to avoid nipple soreness. I encourage her to lubricate her nipple
with a little oil or lansinoh. Since she is not yet making milk, it
doesn't matter which lubricant she makes, as long as it does not
irritate her nipples.
Once mom sees a drop of milk or starts to experience the increased
stretchiness of the nipple that the hormones of lactation produce, she
can start pumping a little longer, about 5 mins per session.
Generally, before the baby comes, moms are getting only drops of milk
with pumping. But once that baby comes, breastfeeding with the Lact-aid
brings in lots of milk. I've had several moms make 1/2 to 3/4 supplies
with this method, and one make a full supply (she also bf her neice for
comfort several years before). Moms who were infertile for hormonal
reasons were less likely to get significant amounts of milk, but were
still able to make some and enjoy the breastfeeding relationship.
