Dear Theresa,

I am sorry for your disgust, but as a donor of milk myself directly to
recipients, I have not yet donated to someone I had previously known.
There is a great deal of informed consent and sharing of my medical
history, environmental exposures and diet, but from there each of the
recipients rely on my credibility to provide them safe milk just as if they
were pumping the milk themselves. I will say that most of my recipients
have been adults, while I have continued to supply a special needs child
100% of her nutritional needs as well.

Many of these recipients appreciate that the milk is NOT pasteurized and
therefore offers them even more of the wonderful properties of human milk
than if it were. I think this is a matter of deciding for yourself and
your precious child, which risks you are willing to accept. I have become
very close to each one of my recipients and take very seriously the
responsibility of being a donor. At this point, I have just barely
maintained a supply sufficient enough for those in need of my milk, so not
all seeking to purchase human milk directly are doing so for perverse
reasons. Many desire the one-on-one personal relationship with their
donor, prefer their milk not to be pasteurized, or simply can't afford it
from the milk banks at this point.

Thank-you for sharing your thoughts, Theresa, as I am sure many agree with
you. I hope though, that I can allow you to see from a little different
perspective.

God Bless,
Penny Lane RN, IBCLC
