Happy Holidays !
In reference to Nikki Lee and the response that Hospital based LCs are
"window dressing". If you want to really dress up the place then have a few. We
are the place to have babies in SFL, currently we have one LC. There are 4 more
with credentials...we do patient care. But we have let the docs know we
exist and they call us to come to see their in hospital patients. And if they
have us for their nurses they really rave. So we decided to take some of the
matter into our own hands. We wrote for a scholarship to send 18 coworkers,
NICU, LD and MOM/Baby units as well as some Patient Care Techs and Nursery
personnel to the Lamaze International Breastfeeding Specialist Program held in Ft.
Lauderdale last October. Then we made a big showcase by the elevators and
acknowledged all the IBCLCs and Breastfeeding Specialists and even a Lab Tech who
will encourage Moms to Breastfeed while drawing heelsticks. This elevator is
where everyone waits for either births or to visit NICU. We are hyping the
Breastfeeding Taskforce Committee and planning to send another coworker to a
course so she can sit her board. Goal if you won't hire more LCs then we will try
to get as many people credentialled as possible.
Our orginial goal was just to get everyone telling the same info. We have
all our new hires and orientees spend a day with the LC so they can see what she
does and what to accurately teach and when to refer. They know that on the
weekends if they can give the IBCLC RNs less of a load we will see patients.
We are trying to beat the management at their game....its slowly working. Will
they see the light just maybe a glimmer since this year is JACHO. Any
further suggestions will be presented to our committee. Also any suggestions for
JACHO.
Thanks,
Leanne Jewell, RNC, LCCE, FACCE, IBCLC
