Many thanks Claire for clarifying the spelling of the word. It is misspelled
in the NY Times Mag article. This article also appears in various websites
(environmental and organic food websites) with the same misspelling.
Matrotrophy is defined by scientist Drexler et al., "Matrotrophy is the
nourishment of developing embryos by a source other than yolk in a viviparious
female." Hm.....nourishment of an embryo? The article goes on to compare
different fish. So, I don't think an evolutionary biologist would be defining
breastfeeding as matrotrophy, eating one's mother. For some reason the author of
the NY Times Mag article made a little blooper. Just a little exaggeration and
who would know? Not me, I don't know evolutionary biology. But it sure
sounded off and it was off. Now why would you write such a thing?? Just a little
mistake.......yes, yes, I know....I am just foolish to believe that an
article in the NY Times Mag could be propaganda.
