Dear friends,
Recently, a Dutch researcher presented a study that indicates that alcohol during pregnancy and lactation is worse than untill now presumed. She advises absolutely no alcohol whatsoever during pregnancy and no breastfeeding during 3 hours after each glass of alcoholic drink (so 6 hours after 2 standard glasses of wine or beer, etc). Habitual (daily) drinking is discouraged.
On one hand I think it is good to know of possible dangers of alcohol for the unborn and the infant. On the other hand I'm afraid that these strict advises will result in a decrease in breastfeeding rates of in a rise of incidental bottles of formula. In my opinion an occasional alcoholised drink of mother's milk is far less dangerous than an occasional bottle of ABM or no breastfeeding at all.

Warmly,

I too would welcome more discussion about alcohol use and bf.
I have been counseling moms that an occasional small drink such as a small
glass of beer at a 'crab or crawfish boil' (very common here), a small glass
of wine when out to dinner, or a wine cooler at a party would be compatible
with no interruption in bf. I emphasize this should be occasional and not
daily or heavy use. (altho I don't see why one glass of wine per day would
be a problem - some cultures drink daily.)
Now I feel compelled to change my advice.
