Mother of two week old reports bleeding nipples as soon as she begins to
pump, from both nipples with deep cracks around tips. She is using a nipple
shield for bottle (confused/ preferring -- what is the PC term here!?) with no
problem and no pain, but when she tries to pump to keep up and increase
supply, the bleeding begins. She had reduction surgery in 1996 and though I am
wondering if this may be connected, I still don't know what to recommend. She
says that during the surgery, the blood supply was kept intct though the
nipples were moved. She is using PinS Advanced, but also used Ameda Elite or SMB
in hospital with SAME problem. The breast shields seem to be correct size
as her nipples are not jammed or pulled. I have encouraged her to contact
Diana West, but in the meantime, we are anxious for suggestions so that her
supply can be maintained. Thanks, Ann Conlon-Smith, IBCLC, LLLL
