Does anyone have any great tips for babies who habitually close down on
or slide down onto the nipple? I have 2 such babies in my practice
right now, and have tried pretty much everything. Both will gape
nicely, tongue down, and then close down just behind the nipple so that
they have only a 90 degree jaw angle, which we know is murder on mom's
nipples. One had the frenotomy she needed, but is still doing this, the
other is gaining poorly, partially from the lousy latch, and is still
hurting mom with the Lact-aid in place. Both moms are holding the
babies well supported against their trunks, reclining to allow gravity
to help hold them on, and getting great asymmetrical latches for the
first second of the feeding! Wedging the breast ("nipple sandwich") is
not helping either, nor is Rebecca Glover's latch, nor the "dent"
technique. Help!
Thanks,
Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC NYC
