Most of my tips about discreet nursing aren't about hiding exposed skin. If
that were all that mattered, the covering blanket would suffice. I suggest
women never use a blanket over one shoulder to hide the baby's nursing, at
least not here in North America where the only people who use a blanket over
one shoulder are those who are trying to hide the fact thay they are
nursing.
Nursing in public involves preparation, by
1. wearing easy-access clothes and
2. practicing discreet nursing all the time.( If you always nurse naked at
home, your baby won't like your clothes near his face when you are
attempting to nurse anywhere in public.)
It involves awareness of and concern for others by
3. nursing at the first sign of fussiness, BEFORE the baby is frantic and
screaming and all eyes are upon you.
4. NOT asking if people will mind. Do not announce what you are going to do.
People will only get nervous, afraid they might see something embarrassing.
Simply begin nursing as if it was the most natural thing in the world, which
of course it is.
5. At that golden moment when you need to get the baby latched and you hope
nobody is looking, THAT's when you make an announcement... to distract them
away for a moment. "Look at that interesting statue!" or "Look at that view"
or "Look! Is that Mel Gibson?"
At summer LLL meetings I would often wear a swimsuit under my clothes and
bring a towel to demonstrate discreet nursing at the beach. Put the beach
towel over your neck with the ends hanging down in front, where they will
hide your breast.
