I am also concerned that this mom;s desire to have the baby nurse for
comfort, but not associate the breast with food, is not likely to end up
anywhere but with nothing happening at the breast, at all. It has been
quite common for adoptive moms to do some feeding with bottles and comfort
nursing. That is about all I succeeded at doing with my first two kids, 19
and 22 years ago. However, it is pretty rare that the babies are willing to
do that for very long. Newborns often will but, IME, the majority of
babies will lose interest in the breast by 2 or 3 months old, if all of
their food is coming from a bottle. If that is all the mother is interested
in doing, that is one thing, but it sounds like this mom has a desire to
keep some amount of suckling at the breast going on. I would almost be
willing to bet that the baby who cries to go to the breast would settle down
and nurse happily, with the Lact-Aid there.
