I had a mother call this morning who has just been told she carries HTLV-1
virus. She had a baby 6 months ago, stored the baby's cord blood and has
just now been contacted by the cord blood storage company and told they
found the HTLV-1 virus in the cor blood. She is very angry that she is just
being given this information. She has been told to stop breastfeeding
immediately. She is going to rent a pump and begin pumping and storing her
milk. I found reference to a 1989 study indicating that the HTLV-1 virus
may be inactivated by freezing breastmilk. I searched the archives but
could find no other info. Needless to say, this mother is devastated. I
would like to be able to give her all of the info I can. Thanks for any
help you can give.
