Please, please everyone. Let's don't make this discussion about the
merits or practices of WIC. That is the organization I originally
mentioned as being one whose admirable drive to put IBCLC's in every
major center in our state may have, as an unintentionable side effect,
prompted some people to claim questionable practice hours to qualify
them to sit the exam. As an organization, their contribution to
breastfeeding support in our state has been enormous, as I have said in
a previous post. Let's don't focus this discussion on lauding or
lambasting them! As others have noted, there are hospital RN's who have
probably done the same thing, for similar reasons. There are also
probably LLLL's, physicians, childbirth educators and others who may
also have padded. . . overestimated. . . falsified. . . whatever, their
practice hours in order to sit the exam. That really was the original
point I was trying to make. This is a good news/bad news thing. The
good news is that our credential has become recognized for quality of
breastfeeding information and skill and is now sought after in an
increasingly significant effort to increase breastfeeding rates. That
is good news indeed. Of course, the bad news is that whenever
something is seen as being of benefit in one's career or job, people may
pursue it in rather questionable ways. As I have said, that is a
growing pain. At least we are not going unnoticed!
