My friend who is pumping for her surviving triplet, Zachary, born at 25
weeks continues to make a lot of milk - generally 40-50 oz a day or even
more. She contacted the Denver milk bank, and passed an initial phone
interview and is waiting on paperwork and a blood testing kit to be sent to
her. She has filled up almost all the freezer space she can get her hands
on at this point. For a while, she was pouring out most of the milk she
pumped, but it made her cry every time, so she stopped doing that. She's
looking forward to being able to donate some milk - she said she sees a lot
of moms at the NICU with her who don't have enough for their babies and she
wishes she could give them some.
Even more importantly, little Zachary came off the vent on Christmas day
after almost 2 full mos! He's now on a high-flow nasal cannula. He is
tolerating full feeds by gavage and gaining well. He's not quite ready to
po feed due to his oxygen requirement, but she is looking forward to
hopefully teaching him to breastfeed. Hopefully her great supply will make
it easier for baby to get fed at breast.
There is some concern that the baby has a groove in his palate from being
intubated so long. Is that likely to cause a problem? And any tips on
teaching a baby that has been so ill to breastfeed?
