I am a nurse who works with moms and babies. If Narcan is given to babies when their respiratory drive is suppressed because mom was given a narcotic shortly before delivery. It is only used when absolutely necessary........a baby with a suppressed respiratory drive or no respiratory drive because of a narcotic would be considered a life and death situation. The same thing would be for an adult. I would hate to think that it might be given if not necessary. I have never needed it myself, but have used it on babies and I know it works. I have never talked to someone who has required its use, but I am sure the side effect would be more welcome than intubated and ventilated due to the depressed respiratory drive.
