Nikki ~
Having lived in India and been married to an Indian, I am sorry to say that
what you describe is not at all uncommon - although it is becoming less the
norm with the current generation of 30+ adults.
It sounds like this womanšs mother-in-law would regard it as a waste of time
for her to breastfeed the baby because it would take her (the mother) away
from her chores primarily looking after her husband. Sadly, many Indians
feel that baby girls arenšt worth the troubleš it takes to breastfeed them.
Indian mothers-in-law rule the roost. A lot of them were badly treated by
their own mothers in law and have waited years to get revenge on their own
daughters-in-law. If the husband tried to side with his wife and baby
daughter, his mother would make his life hell.
I am saddened to learn that, in this day and age, in the prosperous West,
women and girls are being treated so badly. My heart goes out to your
client.
