I absolutely agree that nipple shields can be very helpful in some
situations. I think what mothers don't like about them long term is that
they can be annoying to use. It's harder to nurse discreetly in public, for
example, because you have to expose your breast long enough to get the
shield in place (sometimes with curious onlookers peering at you), rather
than just quickly and discreetly attaching the baby. Then sometimes when the
baby finishes, you find yourself with some milk still in the shield - so you
don't want to just toss it back into the diaper bag, and you need to find a
place to rinse it out (not always handy if you're sitting on a bench in the
mall). Yes, these are minor things in the bigger picture of the
breastfeeding relationship, but they're the kind of thing that make mothers
really want to get rid of the shields even if they're otherwise working
well.
