Hi Lactnetters,
I do a similar group as Pat for the past 5 years (how the years fly
by!) We put the flyer in each new mom's packet, but I love the idea of a
flyer in each room. The hospital has an ad each month in the local paper,
but I doubt many women read with a new baby,I didn't until my children
were older. I tell moms who call with questions to come, often have
delivered at other hospitals farther away. I usually have a core group of
4-6 mothers and as their babies get older, try to send them to LLL groups
or other mothers groups. I do them the 2nd and 4th monday of each month,
10a-12p, some stay over. The 1st mon(morning) and 3rd mon. (evening)of the
month is called Baby Talk, and open to both breast or botttle moms.
The most fun was last year when my own daughter came with her baby the
first 3 months, then she had to work, (continued bf, still nursing, Emily
will be 2 Dec. 28!, ). She attends occasionally now she is unemployed and
loving fulltime motherhood). The mothers love her and Emily, and I think
she is such a role model for nursing, would love her to become an LC or
LLL leader, I read occasionally here in lactnet some daughters have become
LC's, my were getting old!
Well, enough rambling, the support groups are my favorite part of work,
the hospital pays me, and it is free for the moms. Many do not have family
in the area, or for example, one mom in my current group, her mom has
always been against her nursing, baby was very allergic( mom can't eat
eggs or dairy, the baby is 7 mo old now and grandma is still for weaning.)
So I see the group has kept her nursing and continued support to keep this
mother and baby happily nursing, and they are. It comes down to the LLL
idea of helping one mother at a time sometime, like this.
I also teach childbirth classes and will include more info in each
class, it is true some moms don't get to the separate bf class. I always
have included bf info but especially when some moms are planning to
bottlefeed in childbirth class, they can be very negative. Once in a
while, they have been convinced to try and did succeed.
So, enough rampbling for now, have to teach a private lamaze class
this morning, rent a pump afterward, and teach my college nursing
pediatric class this evening (where I have pointed out to my students that
most of the babies we see hospitalized so far this semester are formula
fed babies!)
It is actually a warm sunny day in the 50's today, wish I could enjoy
more of it today!
Warm regards,
