Hi,
When I worked with Swiss German speaking mothers, I learned the word for
breastfeeding in German was stillen. This word can also mean 'to soothe".
This is similar to the Dutch <stillen>, which means soothing your hunger.
Saeugen means to breastfeed or to suckle and a Saegling which means baby--
literally
translates to litte suckler.
This is similar to Dutch <zuigen> (to suck) and <zuigeling> (one who sucks,
meaning infant appr. first year). But in day to day speech these little ones
are mostly referred to as <baby>, pron. as in English
Warmly,
Gonneke van Veldhuizen, Dutch IBCLC in Germany
