Hi,
Just saw the 5 minute news item on nursing. It was pretty good, an LC
(can't remember her name, or if she was IBCLC), who was a little nervous
but gave accurate information, and a new mom actually nursing her few mo.
old baby, it showed a co-sleeper next to her bed. I wish I had taped it
for classes, but it came on too fast for me to figure out the VCR!

Ellen Mahony, RN, MS, IBCLC, LCCE
Greenwood Lake, NY (where it is unseasonably warm today but appreciated)

I actually had a ped and his wife in my childbirth class this weekend (she
is also a ped but not certified yet.)He enthusiastically endorsed
breastfeeding to the class, but said 4-6 months, the mother can totally
support the baby, I gently said the new AAP guidelines just out in Feb.
say 6 mo for total bf before needing other food, but I was thrilled all 10
couples in my class want to bf, now to get them committed and to further
classes. I often see my prenatal classes essential to encouraging bf. I
also had a postpartum group today with 7 new moms and babies, 2 had
stopped bf for some various reasons, so in spite of their initial
committment, some obstacles occurred they felt they needed to wean. the
other 5 were nursing babies from 1 mo to 10 mo. I wonder if the moms who
weaned had contacted me more, I could have helped them continue. All in a
week's work, different situations, some successful, some only partly. As
you all know well, this job can be frustrating and rewarding, all in the
same week!
