Hi, Angela: If you do a Google search on Neonatal Pain Relief, you should
find lots of "ammunition". Pain relief in young babies is a hot topic
right now and most hospitals now have neonatal pain relief protocols in
place. I'm trying to get our OBs to allow moms to lean over baby and nurse
while the circumcision is being done. (Tongue-in-cheek!) There is ample
evidence that sucking/receiving "sweet" substance releases endorphins, the
body's natural pain reliever. The "artificial" way is to offer a pacifier
and "sweet-ease". Of course, the natural way is to offer the breast.
