It can be the soap she is washing with ,or the fabric softener or maybe they
need an extra deep rinse. I remember doing the extra deep rinse with Calgon
to get all the last bit of soap out.

I had the same thought, having had all 6 of mine in pre-disposable diaper days. Only I used a second rinse with 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar in it (quite cheap). No softener in either washer or dryer, and the smell comes out in the dryer or in line drying. I still use it in each and every load of any and all kinds of laundry I do to this day.
