This for Debbie Albert and her frustrations....just a bit further South on
the penisula known as Florida take all your frustrations and add the dimensions
of multi culture.
Just last week I "bragged" too soon on the classes we were implementing for
the staff at our facility to all get it right on the same page. Well this am
in report I was told the totally breastfeeding mom was sending her baby to the
nursery and the staff fed the baby 50 ml and 60ml the next two feedings. The
mom was weaing hard shells with the small openings because the enthusiastic RN
thought they would be helpful for sore nipples. The next door patient had
shells on because the same nurse thought they might be better than breast pads
to keep the moisture away from the skin on a Mom who had her milk come in
overnight. So here I come to clarify but it seems more like confuse the situation
more....only thing I had going were my credentials. This lovely night nurse
must have been asleep or half asleep during the mandatory class. So its not
only sleepy or doped up Moms but often sleepy and dopey RNs and staff.
Left them to my colleagues as I had to run up to another hospital where my 6
week old granddaughter was being admitted for fever of unknown origin with
probably same bug as her Mommy had last week. Was glad to see no one tried to
keep Mom from breastfeeding a perfectly willing baby who was as "traumatized" by
4 IV attempts and labs draws as her poor parents were....my daughter said the
staff told her to breastfeed her baby to help her forget the multiple needle
sticks and failed IV attempts. IV finally got in and Mom did the only thing
she could do....breastfeed. It helped both Mom and baby and Grannie to see her
couplet snuggled together. A problem tonight maybe no cobedding.
So Debbie how do we get the peds and obs to understand the issues they
initiate by providing conflicting information? Will the docs in Florida or US
ever get it?
