Let me first reintroduce myself, since I have been "no-mail" for almost 3
years and only recently have had time to rejoin the discussion. I am an RN,
IBCLC (past 10 years) and LLL leader (17 years) in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.
I want to recommend a book that provides insight into the lives, culture and
customs of women in India. The book is titled "May You Be the Mother of a
Hundred Sons: A Journey Among the Women of India." The title comes from a
traditional wedding blessing. The author, Elisabeth Bumiller, is currently
a writer for "the New York Times." At the time she wrote this book in 1990
she had been living in India for 4 years. The book examines many of the
issues brought up in the recent Lactnet discussion and puts them in a
cultural context. You can find the book in your local public library, or
buy it new or used, hardcover or paperback at amazon.com. I read it back
when it was newly published, and the descriptions and points made have
stayed with me ever since.
