Dear Friends:
In the beginning of my career, I was not comfortable with teaching hand
expression. I had never done it, never seen it, and had only read about it. I
would mention it with clients, and my atttitude was definitely pro-pump.
It helped to see videos of how it worked and attend workshops about it.
Kittie Frantz has a good video. There is a section of 'Breast is Best' about
it ( the great film from Norway). Gill Rapley, the midwife who tends the
Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative in the UK does a terrific presentation,
including a trial of using her breast model. If one does the technique correctly on
the model, one is rewarded with a dollop of hand cream. Also Tine Jerris,
who administers the BFHI in Denmark has a good film (not ready for distribution
yet) and a lovely presentation about hand expression.
There are many different ways to hand express; I teach mothers 3 ways
now, and encourage them to find their own. Some don't have the money or
resources to obtain a pump, so hand expression is perfect. It is free, quiet, and
environmentally sound. It also promotes a woman handling her own breast, which
is the foundation for breast self-exams.
warmly,
