I suspect that the lipids are breaking down- most moms think of it as
a spoiled smell but she might have been interpreting it differently.
   another thought is that she is either taking fish oils, a vitamin
that is causing the smell or - highly unlikely to cause the odor-
eating fish or something that is causing it.

recently someone recommended gentle agitation to mix the fat back into
the milk as opposed to shaking in order to not disrupt the lipids and
cause that odor.   You should be able to find that in the archives in
the last couple of months.
